[W2] Ageing (Growth) of a Monstera Deliciosa

W2a. Rolled Up Monstera

Technique: HB Graphite Pencil and Mechanical Pencil on 110gsm paper
Process: Outline of the leaf was carefully stencilled an scribble-line shading was performed.
Reflection: HB pencil was not fairly blunt therefore outline had to be repeated. Shading technique was not the best technique to portray the shading as it majorly covers whole silhouette.
+ :
- : Realism lacks
W2b. The Beginning of the Unfolding

Technique: HB Graphite Pencil and Mechanical Pencil on 110gsm paper
Process: A distinctively new form appeared on the next day. Scribble-line and hatch shading was performed.
Reflection: The weight of the shading for this image is largely better than yesterdays. The balance of weight allows a more realistic appearance of the leaf. More practice can still be performed.
+ :  Shading weight and balance.
- : The shading from light to dark can coherently flow better.
W2c. The Flattening Begins

Technique: HB Graphite Pencil and Mechanical Pencil on 110gsm paper
Process: Large dramatic change, yet again, to the form of the leaf. The outline is now larger and I tried to replicate the rolls the leaf had onto paper with shading and lines.
Reflection: Shading is still something I need to practice more of. The use of the hatch technique covers about 75% of the shading as I tried to step back from the scribble-line technique to provide a neater finish.
+ : Outline and form of the leaf is very similar to the initial photos.
- : Again, the shading from light to dark can coherently flow better. Scribble-lines shading should maybe not be performed.
W2d. The Final Form is Almost Achieved

Technique: HB Graphite Pencil and Mechanical Pencil on 110gsm paper
Process: The leaf has almost grown out and flatly. Larger in size and the leaf's outline is easier to draw because there are minimal rolls and folds.
Reflection: The shading used for this drawing was entirely hatching with one direction and I found it difficult to accurately capture the realism effect.
+ : Outline and form of the leaf is very similar to the initial photos.
- : Shading does not capture realistic view.
W2e. The Monstera Leaf Fully Open

Technique: HB Graphite Pencil and Mechanical Pencil on 110gsm paper
Process: The leaf is now fully open with a larger outline of the leaf and very visible leaf veins. Shading was then added to the lead using the hatch and scribble-lines techniques.
Reflection: On the third and fourth image of the week, the leaves did not possess the scribble-line shading technique but because the final leaf was so large, performing a hatch technique was just taking too much time for me therefore I started using scribble-lines again.
+ : Outline and form of the leaf is very similar to the initial photos. Leaf veins are so much more visible.
- : Shading does not capture realistic view.
